VALUES
"I HAVE LEARNED THAT AS LONG AS I HOLD FAST TO MY BELIEFS AND VALUES, AND FOLLOW MY OWN MORAL COMPASS, THEN THE ONLY EXPECTATIONS I NEED TO LIVE UP TO ARE MY OWN."
↳ MICHELLE OBAMA
"YOUR VALUES BECOME YOUR DESTINY"
↳ GHANDI
If you think about life as a road you are travelling your values are like a map that guide your key decisions along the way.
Which roads will you turn down? Where will you stop along the way? Will you try and cut corners? Or will you take the scenic route?
The more you understand your values, the easier it will be to make certain decisions. If you value adventure and new experiences travelling or moving away from your hometown might make sense. On the other hand, if you deeply value your local community you might choose to stay where you are, and work out ways you can give back to your 'hood.
No one else can decide your values. And they may change over time. But trying to name them can be a really helpful thing to do, particularly after you've finished school and are working out your next steps.
TOP TIP ↴
You've been surrounded by values all your life. Your family has them. Schools have them. Try not think about the values you feel like you 'should' have, according to these other groups. If you were designing your life 'from the ground up', how would it look?
Take your time and keep an open mind; finding your values is an ongoing process.
When it comes to your values, always keep asking questions. Here are a few you might find helpful.
HERE ARE SOME STEPS TO GET YOU STARTED ↴
1
What matters most to you?
2
What makes you tick?
3
Who are you inspired by?
4
How do you approach each day?
